To procrastinate is to delay a task. We all fall into the trap sometimes don’t we? But once we get ourselves to start doing the task at hand, the momentum pushes us forward. The trouble is to get started. Here are four ways to minimise procrastination and start moving!
(1) Assign an “Auditor”
Tell someone trustworthy what you want to achieve and why you want to do so. Set a specific time everyday to ‘report’ to him of your progress. If you fail to do so, he will remind you of your reasons. Actions are propelled by purpose. If one procrastinates, more often than not, he has forgotten his purpose.
(2) Hang out with people who has the outcome you want
People are the product of the environment. Surrounding yourself with people who has the outcome that you want will remind you of how far you are from them. Their mentality are manifested in their words and actions which can in turn, influence how you think.
(3) Break the task into smaller achievable action plans
Remember KISS: Keep it short and simple! One small achievement leads to another. Success breeds success. Rather than measuring progress, it is easier to quantify small accomplishments as it allows us to see progress. Such visible progress would definitely boost our morale that we’ll be raring for the next small achievable action plan!
(4) Reduce progress obstacles
We know clearly what are some of the obstacles that are hindering our way towards achieving our goals. Make a conscious effort to reduce them. Reduce it to zero over time. For instance, cutting down the number of rounds for playing games; from 3 rounds to 2 rounds to 1 round and eventually zero. Do not eliminate completely at the start because that would only be temporary. Remember to make it measurable.
You would probably agree to these 4 simple steps and… still procrastinate. Take it easy! Start the process by writing down these 4 steps. Then, paste it somewhere in your room that you will always see. You could store it as a wallpaper on your phone or computer. Do whatever it takes to keep reminding yourself to follow these 4 simple steps! Start now!
