River Valley High School Fireside Chats 2015
BY LTH ON JULY 7, 2015
One of our partners, Cheng Zong, had the opportunity to attend Fireside Chats 2015, organised by River Valley High School (RVHS). As an alumni of RVHS, he was very excited to be able to be back there interacting with the staff and students.
RVHS's Fireside Chats is targeted at providing exposure for the students to learn about the variety of career and profession choices available, the common challenges faced in the 21st century, the need for constant and never ending improvement, as well as the importance of Life Skills.
Many of the students asked our partner a variety of questions, ranging from the requirements of academic courses provided in tertiary education to questions like how one can balance work and business at LTH along with the academic rigour at university (our partner is concurrently an undergraduate at Singapore Management University).
Besides sharing with the students his process in entrepreneurship and education, one important point that the students had to understand was that many of the careers, professions and businesses present today (2015) did not exist a decade ago in 2005. The careers, professions and businesses that will be in the economy when these students complete their education may not even exist yet. Those careers and professions that some of the students mentioned they were interested in today, may not be around when they complete their education.
What the students need to keep in mind is that they must always be willing to learn, and constantly improve themselves in terms of their Life Skills. Public speaking, leadership and the ability to work well in teams is just one of the many Life Skills that they can choose to improve on while schooling. These skills will remain with them for their entire lives, and these skills will never become obsolete.
